How can I check if the sound card of my laptop, a Dell XPS 13 (2015) (9343), is loaded in HDA mode or in I2S mode?

According to ArchWiki, that laptop has a dual-mode sound card

How can I check if the sound card of my laptop, a Dell XPS 13 (2015) (9343), is loaded in HDA mode or in I2S mode?

According to ArchWiki, that laptop has a dual-mode sound card

You can start by identifying the soundcard with lspci -nn, identifying the loaded sound modules with lsmod, looking for the name of the Codec chip in /proc/asound/card*/codec#*, and generally reading the dmesg output after boot to get an idea what hardware you have.

So far, I've never seen any laptop or desktop that uses I2S to connect a codec - that's done in embedded systems, if at all. So it's a pretty safe bet that you have a HDA card.

          Edit

          Your soundcards are

          00:03.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Audio Controller [8086:160c] (rev 09)
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio Controller [8086:9ca0] (rev 03)

According to the Wiki page you linked, the first soundcard should show up as broadwell-rt286 ALSA device in I2S mode (which is decided upon boot by ACPI). So check cat /proc/asound/cards, but my guess is that "Broadwell-U" is not the same as "Broadwell RT286", even as PCI description.

Quick googling finds this to show what I2S usage would look like: You have a bunch of active snd_soc_* modules (soc = system on a chip, I said it's normally only used in embedded devices) in addition to the snd_hda_* modules which drive the remaining HDA HDMI soundcard, and you have the corresponding broadwell-audio and haswell-pcm-audio messages in dmesg. As you have none of these, my guess is still "HDA", but you didn't provide enough information to decide.

If you find this all still confusing, please put the full output of dmesg after boot, the output of cat /proc/asound/cards, the output of lsmod, the output of cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* into a pastebin or similar, and edit your question with the link.
