RBP 3+ Stuck at rainbow screen after LUKS encryption

I'm trying to create a raspberry pi with kali linux that is encrypted with a key that is located on a USB device, so it doesn't boot without the USB device plugged in. I followed this guide: https://warroom.rsmus.com/encrypted-leave-behind/ However, after two full days of attempting it, I keep ending up with the same issue. After I'm done with encrypting etc and I try to boot the raspberry pi, all I get is the rainbow screen (also turned that off to see any error messages etc but nothing) and then nothing happens. I suspect it's not loading the kernel or something. I'm really out of ideas on what the issue could be. UPDATE 1: Did some more debugging and when I remove the following line from the /boot/config.txt file, it does boot a bit further and tries to start up, it then stop @ crng in
