SSH connection immediately closes after login

1

As soon as I correctly authenticate through ssh with private key, and I get the motd, the connection closes with exit status -1.

In auth.log I get disconnected by user.

/etc/passwd seems fine.

It worked perfectly last time I tried few days ago and I didn't touch anything server or client side.

What else can I try?

  • Try restarting the sshd daemon

  • I already rebooted everything

    Sep 28 '16 at 20:39

  • restore your .bashrc and .profile files. Then (all done as root) restart the ssh daemon (service ssh restart) and try logging in again. If that doesn't work, stop sshd (service ssh stop) and manually start sshd in the foreground, in debug mode: $ '/usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e' (your sshd binary may be located in a different location, but that's what my debian install has.) This will create an ssh server daemon process in debug mode, attached to the foreground, logging to the terminal. From there, you can parse the logged output (and potentially post it here for us to review.)

  • Try restarting the sshd daemon

  • I already rebooted everything

  • restore your .bashrc and .profile files. Then (all done as root) restart the ssh daemon (service ssh restart) and try logging in again. If that doesn't work, stop sshd (service ssh stop) and manually start sshd in the foreground, in debug mode: $ '/usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e' (your sshd binary may be located in a different location, but that's what my debian install has.) This will create an ssh server daemon process in debug mode, attached to the foreground, logging to the terminal. From there, you can parse the logged output (and potentially post it here for us to review.)

  • Does ssh federico@192.168.1.72 true work (i.e. print nothing and exit with status 0)?

  • ssh federico@192.168.1.72 true doesn't print anything. if i add -vvv it still exit with status -1

As soon as I correctly authenticate through ssh with private key, and I get the motd, the connection closes with exit status -1.

In auth.log I get disconnected by user.

/etc/passwd seems fine.

It worked perfectly last time I tried few days ago and I didn't touch anything server or client side.

What else can I try?

  • restore your .bashrc and .profile files. Then (all done as root) restart the ssh daemon (service ssh restart) and try logging in again. If that doesn't work, stop sshd (service ssh stop) and manually start sshd in the foreground, in debug mode: $ '/usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e' (your sshd binary may be located in a different location, but that's what my debian install has.) This will create an ssh server daemon process in debug mode, attached to the foreground, logging to the terminal. From there, you can parse the logged output (and potentially post it here for us to review.)
