Granting the IIS AppPool account access to a private key

0

I am trying to allow my web server app pool to run as an account other than Local System. I seem to need LocalSystem in order to access the private key associated with a particular client certificate located in the LOCAL_MACHINEMY store.

I have granted the web pool account access to the private key via the MMC Certificate snap-in but try as I might I cannot get it to work.
I have followed these steps and used this tool.

The certificate in question is authorised by way of another certificate that is stored.

The links above also refer to a FindPrivateKey tool that, when I compile and use it does not seem to locate a physical file associated with the key (although the MMC snap-in clearly shows the private key is present) and theWinHttpCertCfg tool shows the app pool account is permissioned to use it.

Thanks
Mark
