My Ubuntu (18.04 on a HDD) is running reaaaalllly slowly… R5 2600/GTX 1070 Ti

0

I'm coming to you with the problem that my computer just does not want to run Ubuntu decently, and for that matter no other distro (except for arch linux) has ever been performing at a usable performance level either, in my experience. Both Chrome and Firefox are very sluggish, and I haven't tried out any games yet, but I can if that information is needed.

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS on a R5 2600 system with a GTX 1070 Ti. My Ubuntu is installed on my WD Blue 1TB hard drive (standard 7200 RPM, SATA 3) because Windows is installed on my SSD. I've tried the open-source graphics driver as well as versions 390 and 396 (396 won't let me go past 1024x768 because my display registers as "unknown display") of the NVIDIA proprietary drivers.

I'm going to try installing the driver versions 410 and 415 as they're also in the "additional drivers" section of the 'software & updates' program, but I don't have very high faith that trying out those other driver versions will be my solution.

Edit: I'm using the default Gnome desktop environment, if that helps.

Thanks in advance,

richput

  • Welcome to AskUbuntu! Please explain in more detail what "really slow" means. Does the desktop environment react slowly? Do applications take a long time to start? Are all applications "sluggish"? Please also tell us how much RAM you have installed. Maybe buying an SSD for Ubuntu would be an option, cheap 128GB 2.5" ones are ~20€ currently.
