Android KeyStore file retained by bad freelance [closed]

0

We have an app currently on the Google PlayStore that has been developed by a freelance using Unity.

We have worked with him for more than 3 months now and we was forced to publish the app even if it's very far from finished because of financial pressure. The original deadline was set 1.5 month after the beginning of the mission (started the first week of September).

At the beginning of November, the pressure was too great and we had to publish it, as is.

And without any surprise, it didn't go well. The ratings are very low, due to the fact that the app is badly developed, unfinished and plain ugly.

The developer is confident that he can fix it and get it done but we are now certain that he won't, and that we will never get the render quality we expect.

So around mid November, we decided to rebuild the app secretly while he was still fixing what he could so clients don't ask too much for refund (and I don't exaggerate this part).

And we did it successfully. We are now ready for production with the new version. We did it using Ionic and the app is working well with almost all the functionalities.

The problem is that the keystore file has been generated in unity by the freelance with which we are now in conflict. He request that we finish to pay for the whole project even if it's less than 50% complete and with very bad user experience. We already gave him more than 75% of the total (by successive parts of 25%) for nothing and it's not thinkable that we give him more.

The Google Play account is ours, and we need to generate a new keystore to deploy an update of the app.

Is it even legal for him to retain this file? This is our Google Play account, not his.

How can we do?

It's very important that we keep the app id, and our current users..

Thanks for your help.

  • You're right, it may not be the perfect place for this kind of question, sorry about that. I didn't find any thread talking about this particular issue so this message may be useful to someone having the same problem in the future. I just contacted Google and they are very open about resetting the key, you just have to send them a new pem file and they will replace it for you. I'm still waiting for them to do it but the person I've talked to didn't seem to have any problem with resetting the key at all. We'll see..
