Where this link ../bin/update-alternatives is located?
Trying to fix the problem,
Your python install is corrupted. Please fix the /usr/bin/python symlink.
on ubuntu 16.04 and ended up looking at the update-alternatives file(s) to see if the relevant links are set properly. I ran the below command to find out where this ../bin/update-alternatives
is located, but could not find it. Any suggestion please.

This sounds like an XY problem - I don't think the /usr/bin/python symlink is normally under the control ofupdate-alternatives
on Ubuntu - unless you manually added it?
