How to make autofs mountpoints browsable?

0

This question has been asked a couple of times before, but the suggested answers haven't worked for me.

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04.05.

If I cd to autofs-mounted /m/foo/bar and ls, I wish to be able to see the list of directories. At the moment they only become visible like this after I, for example, try to cd into one, say cd /m/foo/bar/foobar.

What I have tried so far:

  • in /etc/default/autofs: BROWSE_MODE="yes"

  • in /etc/autofs.conf:

    1. browse_mode = yes

    2. browsable_dirs = yes

  • in /etc/auto.master: +dir:/etc/auto.master.d --ghost

  • in /etc/auto.master.d/foo.bar.autofs: /m/foo/bar /etc/auto.d/auto.foo.bar --ghost

After each adjustment to configurations, I've tried running service autofs reload and when nothing changes, then service autofs restart and finally service autofs forcerestart.

I've put OPTIONS="-d" in /etc/default/autofs.ucf-dist. Running reload, restart and forcerestart prints in the syslog respectively:

Feb 5 12:31:04 cs-228 autofs[2310091]: * Reloading automount maps...

Feb 5 12:31:17 cs-228 automount[2310195]: umount_autofs_indirect: ask umount returned busy /m/home

Where /m/home is not /m/foo/bar. I've also tried logging out and in again.
